![]() On the Radio 1 "News at One" programme today, RTE journalist Seán O'Rourke was chatting with the captain of the US warship which is in Cork for the weekend. They spent a lot of time talking about the history of the ship's name, but didn't seem to bother for a [moment] to speak about what this particular warship on our shores has been doing. The USS Sullivan is an ARLEIGH BURKE CLASS (AEGIS) GUIDED MISSILE DESTROYER (see full spec here: http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/burke/). A quick search with Google into this ships recent history puts it right in the middle of America's most recent conquests. It was going to be disarmed in Yemen, USS Cole-style. The Prince of Peace Ploughshares boarded this warship shortly after it was made in 1997 too, to begin disarming it nonviolently (see http://www.musenet.org/~bkort/plowshares/). |
