Activist First aid

category dublin | anti-capitalism | news report author Tuesday July 22, 2003 17:32author by padraicauthor email wageslave at eircom dot netauthor phone 087 643 6473

This Saturday in Dublin (venue details to follow) there will be an activist first aid workshop held by a woman from Germany.

Here's a bit of a spiel in her own words:

"I`m not an official first-aid teacher, I just have lots of experiances with first-aid at demonstrations. And I organised many courses with official trainers for the left scene of Norderstedt in the last years.
I`m interested in an international exchange of experiances with first-aid at demonstrations (and anti-fascist activities...). A meeting with me will be no substitution for a complete official first-aid course made by the red cross or other organisations.

Most of my practice is with tear gas and bat used by the police (or "normal" accidents at festivals and punk-concerts).
I`m able to tell (and practise with) you following themes: own safety of helpers, moving casualties out of danger area, first contact to injured person, unconsciousness, pulse and respiration control, shock, dangerous bleedings, concussion, wound treatment, eye washing and fractures. "

So if you have any interest in first aid at demos or protests, are thinking of going summitt hopping in the near future or volunteered for the medical group of the gg antiwef initiative then this is probably the thing for you!
There's only so many people can be facilitated so can people email or ring me (087 643 6473) to confirm that they want to go?

Most of our 'revolutionary' activists consider that pulling down a fence is a most dastardly piece of violence, that could never be justified. So, naturally, it is rare that they need medical treatment at their demos.

However, if the Fraulhein has much experience in treating 'speechifiers throat', 'placard wavers elbow', or that most awful of psychological ailments: 'unrequited love of the leader', then she may come in handy. If not I fear that she won't be much use.

Fare point, but it's convenient to have some knowledge when abroad at more 'active' protests. And besides, knowing a bit of first-aid is very handy.
