According to an advertisement in today's national daily newspapers a company called ERM (Environmental Resources Management Ireland Limited, has been commisssioned by the Dept. of Transport and Dept. of Environment, Heritage and Local Government to investigate Public Safety Zones (PSZs) at Ireland's three principal airports - Cork, Dublin and Shannon.
According to the advert, these proposed Public Safety Zones consist of appropriate land use planning controls in the vicinity of the airports to protect the public on the ground from a small, but real, possibility of an aircraft crash.
The advert is inviting members of the public to comment on a draft report on their findings before their report is finalised and submitted to the two government departments. In the meantime they are holding public information days at the three airports as follows:-
CORK: Great Southern Hotel, Cork Airport between 10.30am and 7.30pm on Monday, 7th July 2003 (TODAY)
SHANNON: Great Southern Hotel, Shannon Airport between same hours on WEDNESDAY, 9th JULY 2003.
DUBLIN: Great Southern Hotel, Dublin Airport, same hours, Friday, 11th July 2003.
Surely there is no more salient issue of public safety than the carrying of armaments and armed troops through our airports - principally SHANNON. Sounds to me like a good opportunity for people to pay a visit to their airport and raise this issue with the consultants.
