Meeting for RTS Legal Defence

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday May 25, 2002 16:11author by RTS Legal Defence

Launch of May 6th legal defence campaign. Calling all the people who were charged or beaten at the Reclaim The Streets demonstration on May 6th, their friends and supporters.

MEETING
Time: 7:30pm, Wednesday 29th May
Venue: The Teachers Club, 36 Parnell Square.

The purpose of the meeting is to coordinate the legal defence for those charged and to mount a campaign against the appalling police brutality shown on the day against peaceful protestors. It will be run as a democratic forum; everyone will have a say in the decisions taken. We will also be discussing means of raising funds for the legal costs and any eventual fines of those charged.

There will be legal advisors present and members of the Indymedia video team who will be describing the various video evidence that they have compiled and letting people know how they may access it for use in legal defence.

So if you were involved in that day's events or wish to assist in the coordination of this campaign, please come along to the meeting.

Stand up to the police!

Issued by the May 6th Legal Defence interim steering group.

What are we going to do about the inevitable undercover presence? will we need to bring proof of identity, injuries or charge sheets etc?

We'll just be careful about what we say, and try not to give the cops any obvious targets. The cops already know who they have charged for harrasment. In any case there will be lawyers present so the cops will be on their best behaviour and the lawyers should be able to advise people on what not to say. Remember this is a perfectly legal and legitimate campaign; we have every right to organise to help those who suffered at the hands of the cops.
