US pushes for early privatisation in Iraq

Baghdad: The US-led coalition plans to privatise the first of Iraq's 100 or so state-owned firms within a year as it begins overhauling the centralised economy of Saddam Hussein without waiting for a new government, a top US official said Thursday.

According to Tim Carney, senior adviser to the Iraqi ministry of industry and minerals "Privatisation is the right direction for 21st century Iraq,"
Who'd a thunk it! bomb them, break them, bomb them, dog them.

According to L. Paul Bremer, American "administrator" of Iraq, "If they choose socialism, that will be their business. My guess is that's not going to happen."

...especially since Iraq is supposed to be a socialist state. Of course the Americans will probably just use Saddam as a demonstration of the evils of socialism...
