Why the Open Wire has been suspended

The North Carolina Independent Media center will not tolerate posts on the Open Wire that include threats, racism, homophobia, classism, and sexism. Examples of unacceptable action on our website include but are not restricted to: hate speech, threatening comments of any type, and altering posted photographs.

Vigorous debate on the Open Wire is encouraged, so long as it stays on topic, is not reduced to personal attacks, name calling, and provides a feeling of open expression.

Due to several threatening posts on the Open Wire, we believe it has stopped being an good place for open expression. We have collectively decided to improve our website and in the interim suspend the Open Wire section of our site.

We regret having to take this step. We will reopen it as soon as we can.
Here are some suggestions for posting to e-mail lists or web forums.
DO NOT POST FLAME BAIT!
DO NOT RESPOND TO FLAME BAIT!

Flame Bait: Intentionally accusatory and harsh material that is written with the purpose of attacking people with the hopes of eliciting an angry response. (i.e. Bait)
Flames: Strongly worded, even violent writing in response to someone else's flame bait or unagreeable writing.
In the interim if you have news that follows the guidelines of our mission statement PLEASE send your stories to nc@indymedia.org.
We are actively searching for the best way to allow you to post and comment to the open wire while retaining a productive and focused atmosphere.
Thank you very much for your patience!
