Incinerator for Ringsend

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday May 13, 2002 17:27author by Terry Report this post to the editors

to handle 500,000 tonnes of waste per year

According to the March issue of the Ecologist magazine (page 17), the Belgian company Indaver are preparing an Environmental Impact Assessment for the building of an incinerator in Ringsend that would handle over 500,000 tonnes of waste per year. This is the same company that has already got planning permission despite local opposition, for an incinerator in Duleek, in Co. Meath. Besides the well known pollution effects of incinerators, experience has shown in many other countries that they tend to put a brake on recycling efforts, largely because much of the material they burn is also recyclable.

I am very concerned about the move to bring incineration to Ireland. It is a poisonous technology. Are local campaign groups working together on this?

The only campaign that I am aware of, is a group against the
Co. Meath incinerator. I don't know if there is a national group.

There are also groups such as Galway for a Safe Environment and
Cork for a Safe Environment who are basically trying to promote
sensible waste policies that do not include incineration and hope
that if councils etc listen to them, then maybe incinerators won't
be built.

However it is quite clear that there is an agenda to force incinerators
through and pay lip service to recycling. You will have noticed that most
of the debate in the 'media' has been reduced to 'Landfill' or 'Incineration'
when clearly this is not the actual case.

Maybe it's time to start a co-ordinating campaign. I think this
is also an issue that the various Anti-Bin Tax campaigns
could also take up, since they are related subjects

There is a very strong campaign in Ringsend (CRAI) Combined Resident Against Incinerators with the full support of the local councilors and T.DS
