Funny really how when RTS calls for an end to peoples dependence on cars that they attempt to block the Bus aka public transport the only thing that really take away peoples dependence from the car

You are not seeing the bus corridors that were made free and then closed for cars. Funny how one picture can sway a gullible person into a pre-concieved notion.
That picture hardly shows a bus being blocaded, get a grip.

The woman is putting her child at risk by having her on the bike without a helmet and confronting a bus.

author by kitty-katpublication date Tue May 06, 2003 10:26author address author phone

was one of about 1,000 or more who came on the day. down at amiens st. people happily let the buses through with great cheering and singing of hail to the bus driver! it was hilarious and the drivers had a chuckle about it too!

author by Noonepublication date Tue May 06, 2003 11:50author address author phone

I was there when the woman cycled into the bus. The bus driver had a smile on his face, as if he was supporting the idea of peopel instead of cars on the road. his smile eventually went, when the ignorant woman wouldnt get out of the way.

She also put her childs life at risk. Even leaving aside the bus blockade stupidity, her head might be harder then the road surface but its unlikely her kids head is. Helmets save lives.

I just hope this picture doesnt get into the mainsrteam media. It would take away from the sensible behaviour of the vast majority of people present.

To attempt to make out that the first photo above "hardly shows a bus being blocaded" is a perfect example of the surreal relationship people like you have with reality.

Happily, this protest will go the same way as all of the others - down the drain. People will stop using cars when something better or cheaper ocmes along, not before. You're influencing precisely nobody. You are a powerless bunch of saddos barely attached to the outer rim of society.

author by pat cpublication date Tue May 06, 2003 14:01author address author phone

Is it surreal to complain about that? I have blockaded traffic, I will always confront motorists who put cyclists or pedestrians at risk.

But anyone who confronts a bus while she has a kid on the bike is in need of counselling.

Any more photos of that nice lady flashing the bus? For research purposes naturally..

Get your bits out for the struggle!

Good to see people having fun, smiling and laughing good naturedly on the streets. When I was young, we use to particpate in a different kind of street activity in Belfast, course we had to mask up.

Dear Disturbed
Just a note inform you the child in the photo can be seen on pg.3 of todays Irish Times sporting a very pleasent 'Barbie' helmet.
May i suggest in future a little less criticism of circumstantial snapshots!

author by Disturbedpublication date Tue May 06, 2003 16:20author address author phone

Is it ok to care about a childs safety part time and to bring a child into combat with a bus?

Its people like her and you who get RTS a bad name.

author by cleaverpublication date Tue May 06, 2003 16:46author address author phone

As someone who has been going on CM cycles for a few years it always pisses me off when people block buses & taxis. I reckon RTS & CM have to be about showing people alternatives not just trying to get on peoples nerves and for most people public transport is the only option other than driving. Also its commuters who have to change their behaviour so maybe the nexts RTS should be on a week day. (22nd of Sept is a monday this year)

This was the first reclaim the streets ive been to in Dublin and quite frankly i thought your idea of street recaiming was pathetic. Apart from a few individuals it contained nothing but a bunch of rich kids, the idea of RTS is that those on it occupy the streets that you are walking on but apart from the beginning of the march. People started to deliberately walk on the footpath in order not to be a public nuisance! What kind of half baked anarchists are RTS Dublin?
Fair play to the woman on front of the bus at least she had the right idea. The sooner who experience an RTS in London the better.

Georgry Porgey pudding and pie
Came to Dublin but can't see why
the Irish are dumb, they can't even riot
Not like on the mainland, you willing to buy it?

author by kitty-kat (bus lover)publication date Wed May 07, 2003 14:54author address author phone

tell me again why it's relevant to inconvenience people who are using one of the alternatives we are encouraging people to use? this rebelling for the sake of rebellion and confrontation for the sake of pissing off one of "them" is futile to say the least.

there will always be a place for buses in my dream city

author by pcpublication date Thu May 08, 2003 20:14author address author phone

i know your not supposed to tell people what to do but i was concerned with keeping the corwd together for safety's sake

i was quite short with her in adviser her to move, i didn't get why she wanted to blcok that bus ,

the main reason not to block is , the old choosing your battles , we had something more omportant to do than that further down the road and i didn't want a crowd gathering halfway there

about the kid being on the bike while she was doing it.
