Some 25 people from Ireland are participating today in the Really Big Blockade of Britain's Trident nuclear weapons submarine base in Faslane, Scotland. I spoke to them on the phone from the Faslane Fuel Depot this morning, and they are in high spirits.
The group are from all over Ireland -- Limerick, Dublin, Belfast, Cork and Kilkenny. They join over 500 other people from all over Europe for this mass action against Britain's weapons of mass destruction.
Most blockaders are at the North Gate, where police are slowly removing their lock-ons and arresting them. All entrances to the base are blocked and no traffic has passed the protesters.
The UL EnviroSoc and Gluaiseacht, the radical student network in Ireland, have organized coaches to Faslane for the past three years now. The main organisers of the mass direct actions at Faslane are Trident Ploughshares, CND and the Faslane Peace Camp.
Trident Ploughshares is a campaign to disarm the UK Trident nuclear weapons system in a non-violent, open, peaceful and fully accountable manner.
