Did the government in Greece chose to close Indymedia Greece????

In Greece things are becoming clear again. Time to counter-attack. Any information will help.

Strange things are happening. What can one say about the situation with the Greek indymedia (Athens - Thessaloniki). the story that has dominated the views of the people who participated on this open forum is that indymedia Greece will not work until the 16th of APRIL!! That is the date when the "dogs of war" Blair, Athnat, Berlusconi will be in Athens for a meeting with the Greek Pri-Wanker, dr. Simitis... The strangest thing however became evident to me tonight as i came back from a demonstration when, while trying to make a connection with UK Indymedia, which has become like the alternative for many at this moment, no connection could be made. The same thing happening with the central indymedia. I do not know if users from Ireland face the same problem. If yes, then it must be a general problem. If not, and only those from Greece cannot connect to these forums then it becomes clear that there is more here than...thin air.
If that is true and that is the case then i hope that other indymedias around the world wiil give space to this new story and will put pressure to all those who want to silence our voice. As for Greek Indymedia, its silence on the first days sounded very suspicious. Explanations are needed and if they can be offered from this forum it will be helpful.

Is there a need for this screaming of conspiracy?

I'm on IMC Europe mailing lists and haven't heard a reason why athens went down though I'm inclineded to go with the code theory.

You could ask the athens collective,

And hey if you're not happy with their answer, go to global and set up your own athens collective,

But really screaming here, demanding we protest when we haven't heard whats gone wrong, is just idiotic

for their silenceon the fact that many IMCs are closed down, attacked by "special" agents. The International IMC community must react , other wise the integrity of the hole IMC project will be broken. IMC Athens is down, so do many others

What is the position of IMC , IMC UK ,

This is serius news for the front page of their editorial/post.

Other wise ... we may thing ..that IMC is allowed only in the case that is not a threat to the Imperialist powers.

When consistently and over a period of months Indymedia Athens confronts all the lies of the imperialist media, the lies of the agents who have set up and framed up citizens in what is dubbbed the trial of the century (read Anti-Patriot Act in Greece-trial of 17N) it is inevtible that WE HAVE TO CLOSE DOWN Indymedia Athens.

US 'Democracy' you see is about losing elections, losing the invasion of Iraq, losing it generally.

Hence we had to take special measures and close down all Indymedia outlets that dont support OUR LINE.

The IMC is back online and everyone knows.
The most serious attack on an IMC was Quebec by the FBI when Bush showed up in town.
Sweden went off line when Putin's soldiers were gassing people in a theater last Oct 22-25
Nothing comparatively serious happened in Greece these last few days, so the loss of Greek Indymedia activity is not such a blow to freedom of speech, there is Cyprus indymedia which working in the same language could take the really important stuff.

what exactly do you mean "hacked"? Can you explain me-us what's on with ath & thes indymedia? I am from Athens and i do not believe words like "anabathmisi". Ti ypopteyesai koinos filtati?

and since then lost of unhappy macedonians have written that Greece has the same problems as Spain.
which is doesn't but anyway.

Just because your server aint working doesnt mean
the news doesnt get out.

The most sticky thing Athens and Thessalonika have dealt with is the ongiong N17 related trials.
and the most reporting has been done on German language sites.

less paranoia more acceptance that only if "all" the indymedia sites go down, is there a vacuum.

There are strong accusations that the Athens IMC is CONTROLED from a leading Greek newspaper – ELEYTHEROPTYPIA. following the orders of Miller – Tegopoulos, deliberately CLOSED down the IMC Athens , with childish excuses

As for Athens IMC , there are some serious things happening. There are down for 3 days. There is no real information from the IMC team in Athens. They claim servers upgrade etc. Mr Miller the US ambassador in Athens started a campaign to the Greek media with suggestion to “calm down” and instructions for “neutral” coverage of the war ( US liberators etc..) .

There are strong accusations that the Athens IMC is CONTROLED from a leading Greek newspaper – ELEYTHEROPTYPIA. Mr. Tegopoulos, the owner of this news paper, is allied very close to the government , and a leading figure in the Greek media trying to control the left wing of the Greek society.

Mr. Miller (US ambassador in the foto) has visited the owners of the news papers also. There are accusations against the editorial team of Athens IMC, controlled from Mr. Tegopoulos ( Eleutherotypia) , that following the orders of Miller – Tegopoulos, deliberately CLOSED down the IMC Athens , with childish excuses.

It is very difficult for me to believe in coincidence, that is to have the server down for 4th day now, and no realistic explanation given.

I am writing from Thessaloniki after visiting the Black Cat "Mavri gata" collective yesterday. Since we announced our actions at the US base at Souda (Crete) on Thursday, our indymedia has been shut down ACROSS GREECE (Thessaloniki and Athina). We still dont know if it is because of a DNS virus from outside or a broader problem with the central US indymedia server or another problem-the people at the collective running the system know the details better...

IMC Athens became a pole of attraction of the anti-goverment left and hence had to be closed down on behulf of US "Democracy".
For a period of months participants have consistently attacked the Greek version of the Anti-Patriot Act (Trial of so-called 17November 'terrorist' group) as well as consistently supporting Iraq's resistance to the imperialist invasion.
Hence indymedia Athens went 'out of control' of the US gang that now dominates Greek political life, hence its termination for 'systems upgrade' (read monopoly control of news networks).

Indymedia teams throughout the world support protest the closure of Indymedia Athens as a prelude to the closure of all Indymedia outlets.

As reported last week, the Argentina IMC is under the threat of eviction and may
already be gone.

It would be foolish to believe that there is NOT a concerted campaign to close down
and or disrupt IMCs all over the world.

The 'dark side' know the IMCs are helping to get the word out and it is threatening their
monopoly of the media. If the IMCs continue, there is the danger that people will become
informed and thus will fuel resistance to the globalization project and the series of wars

WHY INDYMEDIA CRASHED

After the giant anti-war demonstration (that became anti-goverment) in Thursday 3 April the programme was surrounding the base in Creta Saturday. Ecofin meeting in Athens Saturday Olympic day in Athens Sunday. The goverment is struggling because the results in all points of activities are horrible. Terrible numbers in economics, unemployment, enviroment and total destruction of the global politismic heritage existed in Greece while the money from EU running as river straight to some pockets.
INDYMEDIA GREECE is the only indepeded media for communication anf first target for this goverment's slaves. So INDYMEDIA desappeard in this crusial moments 3 April without any kind of announcement since 5 April.
In another Greek sites some people from the Indy team they say they didn't know why was crashed and "propably was activity by US Embassy".
When they understund that communication immigrants use UK INDY and ITALIAN INDY and they find out that the problem propably could be only by inside of INDYMEDIA GREECE, after two days (5 April) the team said that the server failed because of programmed updates at the server in USA. If they were programmed those updates why didn't announsed them earlier? Why they said about the US Embassy?
Why they waited two days with crashed INDY to inform about the updates?
Till now is clear that INDY GREECE crashed and the team didn't offer a clear excuses but change announcements from day to day.
When INDY, if ever will start working (after the storm for the goverment passes) will be clear whom to blame.
Today is 7 April and still without INDYMEDIA GREECE. The server is alive answering but access denied.
Also at 16 April all the leaders will be in Athens and security will be horrible. They are planning to rise walls so not even eye contact will be allowed to them and to us.
They will not permit free walking on the streets. The only reason for this security is to keep the EU leaders far from the problems that GREECE is facing by this goverment and its policy and how is destroying EU money to catastrophic projects for the state and citizens. They will try to show a face that the poor Greek citizens are terrorists and how well they manage the problem of "terrorism".
They will try to take the hell out of the leaders and so they will take more money for the five pockets with the excuse of the problems of terrorism that they are facing but is not excisted and with more antidemocratic behavior to citizens.
