A move to promote the Irish language throughout the island
----------------------------------------------
DUBLIN - The Koran, the most sacred text in Islam, is to be translated into the Irish language, Leslie Carter, a spokeswoman for the Islamic Cultural Centre in Dublin, said Tuesday.
She said the centre is working on a translation plan with Foras na Gaeilge, set up under Northern Ireland's 1998 Good Friday agreement to promote the Irish language throughout the island.
"The plan to translate the Koran is in its early stages," she said. "It will be a lot of work (translating the Koran directly from Arabic into Irish) and it will probably be a year before it is finished."
The Islamic community is the fastest growing religious minority in Ireland, which is predominantly Roman Catholic. There are about 18,000 Muslims in the republic, almost 12,000 of them in the capital Dublin.
