Bernard, Phyllis and 15 others (who have become known internationally as the "Grenada 17") were tried in 1986 for their alleged part in Bishop’s death, and found guilty of murder. Twelve of them, including the Coards, were sentenced to death and the others to life imprisonment. The trial is widely regarded as having been hopelessly biased and legally flawed, for instance, through improper jury selection procedures and failure to admit medical evidence of the use of torture during interrogation. Nonetheless, the Grenada Court of Appeal in 1991 rejected the Grenada 17’s appeal; today, the judges have still not produced a written statement of their judgment.

Immediately following the 1991 verdict, Bernard Coard and four others were about to be executed, but an international outcry led to a postponement, and then to the commuting of the death sentences to life imprisonment. However, the Grenada 17 were, by special legislation, deprived of the right to appeal to the Privy Council. This denial of a right now available to all other Grenadian citizens constitutes discrimination of a clearly political nature, all the more so since Grenada has no internal parole system. The 17 could therefore only be released by a decision of the government of Grenada.

From Kokomero's own links, you get the information that scores of people, including Maurice Bishop of the socialist New Jewel Movement, his wife and many of his supporters were killed. Basically because the "hard-line Stalinist" Bernard Coard wanted to seize power.

It's too bad we didn't let him massacre more people.

but remembers that permission was not sought from Mrs Saxe Coburg Goethe Windsor the present Queen of England and listed as sovreign of Granada as well as a few other places.
Mr Reagan did not seek HMG permission to invade Grenada.
Also worth remembering is the legendary "cock-up" of the CIA and US Naval Intelligence during that operation. They used ordinance survey maps which were last current in the thirties and wrongly laid seige to the school house on the little peninsula to the north of the island wrongly believing it to be the Governer´s residence.

And there were no t-shirts.

You're all wrong. Current US expansionary policy started with the occupation of Italy in 1943 and an announcement by FDR that "Dr. New Deal is Out and Dr. Win-The-War is In." The policy was sealed during the smoke-filled-room negotiations that led to Harry Truman being picked to run for Vice President over then current Vice President Henry Wallace in 1944 BEFORE the Democratic Party's National Convention of that year because it was understood by those controlling the Party and thus the country that FDR would likely soon die in office, so the VP choice was crucial to their post-war vision--one decidedly NOT shared by Wallace. This is a fundamentally important point in history that is conveniently overlooked, forgotten and at times abused. The differences between the two men are stark, and Wallace had a very well articulated vision for the post-war that was totally at odds with the imperialists who made sure Truman got the nod.

US post-war imperial policy drew on its pre-war roots and is essentially the same now as then in its primary goal: To control the world in such a way as to benefit specific interests in the USA at everyone else's expense. What we have seen since 1981 is just a more baldfaced expression of that policy, with the current Bush regime being the most abhorrent to date. To paraphrase the words of Henry Wallace, Empire has always been the enemy of the common man, and through its demise, humanity will have a chance to recover and prosper as never before, with the establishment of true civilization in the upcoming century of the common man. So instead of this certainly obtainable vision, we got the "American Century" and all the disaster it has brought in its wake. To oppose the American Empire and work for its demise is to promote the dignity and wellbeing of all humnaity.

You are telling us all we got it wrong in our anaylsis of 20th century history because we haven´t written of Wallace and the end of FDR.
I wonder have you read the SIS files on FDR which were released under the fifty year rule?

and i can tell you I am looking forward to the slightly less censored papers released under the 60 and 100 year old rule.
The British establishment was fully aware of FDR´s health problems.
The Americans didn´t invent the anglo-american empire.

1943 Italy laid roots for the Mafia.
Karlof1 is right to point at WW2 US policy.
But Italy did not present a model for extra state administration. The MacArthur Japan project did that.
US imperialism was born in the Pacific not Italy.
