Many thousands preparing for anti war actions across the North

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday March 11, 2003 17:41author by Davy Carlin - W/Belfast SWP and Belfast Anti War Movementauthor email carlindavid at hotmail dot com Report this post to the editors

The Anti War coalition calls for Day X action {the day after the bombing} and a mass march in Belfast on the 22nd

The day after the bombing starts lunchtime rallies are to be held across towns and cities across the North with a rally outside Belfast City hall at 1pm. Then on the 22nd March A mass demonstration will take place in Belfast at 2 PM at the Art college and then march to the city hall, the same format as the last time. Like Feb 15th the Belfast Anti War Movement will also be organising feeder marches around the city into the city centre. There will again be one from West Belfast {the feb 15th one had 1000 marching down the falls} with the possiblity this time of trying to link up with others from the protesant Shankill Rd as we march down the Falls.{Other feeder marches are also being organised from across Belfast.} An activists meeting will take place in the Cultralann on the Falls RD for the West Belfast march this Thursday at 7pm to begin organising. All welcome. Other activists groups with members from the West include SSAW, BIFHE, teachers and education workers against war, lecturers against the war, and civil servants against the war. Details of all these can be provided via my E-mail.

Secondly although these are the official rallies sponsored by ICTU {NI} as part of the coalition other actions such as walkouts, strikes, occupations and mass direct action are being discussed and may also be initiated by other large sections of the coalition. Again if a group or organisation wishes to get involved or have representation on the Belfast Anti War co-ordinating committee {which includes, community, womens, ethnic minority groups as well as trade union activists, solidarity campaigns, socialists, republicans, independants, political parties and peace groups etc} - for such actions they can again contact me via my e-mail for details.

Great that you're organising for when they start to bomb, but we should also work to PREVENT this war. The warmongers are split. Blair is facing a huge revolt in his party and cabinet. Bush is increasingly isolated. Let's stop the war BEFORE it starts.

The SWP is only against Anglo-American imperialism in Southern Ireland. The most blatant presence of that imperialism is not at Shannon. It is in the North of Ireland. To protest Imperialism at Shannon and ignoring its more vile expression is the basic weakness of the Irish 'left'

Jim I think you are mixing the SWP up with the SP.

The one saving grace of the SWP is their consistent anti-imperialism ie they oppose British Imperialism in ALL of Ireland.

How come they haven't picketed bases in the North then?
How come they don't support the picketing of army bases?
How come Blair visited here only last week and the SWP weren't to be seen?

SF havent on this issue either. It would have been easy for SF too upstage the rest of the campaign by doing so. There are political sensitivities so I guess they are letting the campaign develop.

Its a bullet which has to be bitten at some stage though; the RIR HQ is in the North & the 1st Battalion RIR are serving in the Gulf.

We all know SF don't instigate much themselves, preferring to hijack protests that already exist to try and win a few votes.ie the Anti War Movement,Dealers Out campaign in Dublin(hypocrosy in it's purest form)etc.
In my opinion the marches at Shannon are a waste of time and the focus should be placed on Brit Army bases in the North. If a succesful picket or even a march was held you can bet SF will jump on the bandwagon. If they did,all the better, the more the merrier.

The only political party of the supposed 'centre or centre left without a political banner on the Belfast demonstration was Sinn Fein and no placcards eithier like in the south. They had very few of their members there and did not organise their members to get there.Even the SDLP banner was there and in the recent coalition meeting some of thier assembly members attended {no SF} and pledged active support. SF have done nothing around the war in N.Ireland and I would be surprised if the did anything for the 22nd. So not to worry about jumping on the Bandwagon as their politics has shifted and is doing so continually to the right in N.Ireland

Will Sf be in attendence at the White House this St Patrick's Day? While Bush is about to launch a massive and bloody war for oil Sf will be exchanging polite conversation and Shanrock with Bush!
