Call for boycott of stores

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Wednesday March 05, 2003 11:51author by Eoin O'Mauthor email alekan at eircom dot net Report this post to the editors

BHS, Top Man, Miss Selfridge etc CEO is racist

Despite a "some of my best friends.." style apology Philip Green of BHS continues to spew forth racist slurs from his tax haven in Monaco.

I would like to ask all IMC readers and anyone else who happens to use this as a news source to boycott the following stores:

Bhs, Top Shop, Top Man, Wallis and Miss Selfridge.

There is at least one of each of these stores in Ireland. I ask you all to boycott the stores despite, or perhaps because, of his apology. Besides, their clothes are shit anyway and probably sweatshopped.

"Retail entrepreneur Philip Green was yesterday forced to offer an unreserved apology to the Irish in a bid to prevent a customer boycott of his Bhs-to-Top Shop stores empire. His apology was prompted by a suggestion, made by Mr Green during a Guardian investigation into his accounts, that the Irish are illiterate.

It almost sounds like a piss-take. I wish I shopped in these places so i could boycott them.

Most of the krusties on Indymedia are semi-literate at best. Paul Kinsella obviously never finished Primary School.

***the difference is that as the real Ray, I know the administrator passwords for this site, and so come in and change your author name, and add messages like this one. Now grow up or go away***

author by Raypublication date Wed Mar 05, 2003 17:00author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Grow up. This sort of shit is pointless and childish. Its also fixable, in that the indymedia collective could, if we decided to, create 'locked' user identities, so that you'd need a password to post under certain user names, or would have to confirm your identity in e-mail.
We _could_ do this, but it would mean one of the people who helps run this site would have to put some time into developing the code. It would also mean extra hassle for all of the sites users, as they'd have to log in each time they post, or some shit like that. But every time an idiot like you posts under someone else's name we get that bit closer to deciding its necessary.
So, the question you have to ask yourself is, is the joke _that_ funny, and do you care _that little_ about the other users of this site, that you're going to continue with these (completely transparent) attempts to imitate other posters? Are you really that immature?

Dont you think that the idiot would just go away if we all just ignored his bullshit, he loves this, all of us wailing and bleating and gnashing our teeth over his moronic amusements...ITS ATTENTION FOR THE SAD BASTARD, just ignore him, give it no attention and i bet'ya he'll fuck off and annoy some other site as soon as he gets bored.

If you want to criticise the SP's position, do it under your own name.
If that's too daring for you, do it under an obviously false or 'humourous' name, like 'SPclone'.
Don't post under the name of a regular indymedia poster. Its stupid and childish.

Critical though I have been of IMC in the past, Rays Doomsday Option has some merit. I also think the impersonation ceases to be funny after a certain stage. ( Sometimes I am unsure which posts are mine!)

How can you have a proper row with the SP if neither side is sure whether the post is genuine? (They are not all as obvious as the ones here.)

Eoin - unfortunately it's in the nature of an Indymedia site that procedure/irrelevant stuff crops up. Best thing to do is to try and steer the 'conversation' back to what you're after. We do delete blatant trolling/irrelevant comments though. More importantly, though, Indymedia is most certainly not a forum, rather, it's a newswire. The function of comments is peer review - further information such as links - corrections - the most important content is in the stories and uploaded multimedia. There are plenty of discussion fora available on the web - we talked before about having separate wire and discussion areas but it didn't get off the ground. Also, the debates that result from posts are useful and do provide information that wouldn't emerge. However, sometimes the comments come to dominate the news-producing function of the site, when users approach the site as if it is Boards.ie or p45.net - the total opposite of credibility and 'media', no matter how you define it.

author by barrypublication date Wed Mar 05, 2003 23:40author address author phone Report this post to the editors

I've spent most of today trawling other IMCs looking to see what nice functions and features they have, preliminary to suggesting that indymedia.ie might change codebase to pick up on some of them. Things like logins to prevent identity theft, things like threading of comments so the lunatics can have their own line to slag each other and things like rating of articles and comments so that the real news and relevant contributions don't always get buried under the shite.

Thing is, whilst all of these features are used in different places, none of them seem to be very necessary. This is by far the most chaotic and vitriolic newswire in the IMC network.

So, in harmony with all the many Rays ;o) GROW THE FUCK UP PEOPLE.

If this is what Irish politics has always been like, no wonder its taken 800 years to get rid of the brits and looks like taking as long to get rid of FF.

Racist remarks about the Irish
I live in London so this bothers me more than most.

Anyone want to expend their energies on boycotting this guy in Ireland? I have experienced a certain amount of low level racism in my 12 years here in London, although it is confined very much to the older generation.
I'd like to see Irish people hit this guy in the pocket.
Apologies to Indymedia if this doesn't constitute journalism, feel free to pull it if you want.

Slán,
Seanín.
