by Graham Caswell - Green Party
Press Release
The Green Party today called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Brian Cowen and the Government to support the Franco-German proposal to the UN.
Party Chairman, John Gormley T.D., said the proposal was now the only option that could avert a full scale war. "It is time for this Government to display some diplomatic courage by wholeheartedly endorsing this Franco-German proposal.
It is astounding that, to date, a so-called neutral country like Ireland has sounded almost as belligerent as the U.S.. Now is the time for Ireland to show its commitment to the UN and to our own constitution by displaying our European credentials in our whole-hearted support for old Europe. It is time for Brian Cowen to cease the bellicose rhetoric and to seek more creative solutions to the Iraq crisis. To date, Minister Cowen and the Government have behaved in a craven an cowardly fashion and shown nothing but contempt for the Dáil, the constitution and the laws of our land. It is time now for Brian Cowen to get off the fence."
Mr. Gormley said that the Greens would continue to put pressure on the Government this week in the Dáil and would be taking part in next Saturday's Anti-War march in Dublin.

The Franco-German proposals explicitly call for the maintainance of sanctions amongst other measures. Therefore they shouldn't be supported by the anti war movement
they are in the current anti-War coalition.
They are facing diplomatic pressure.
New York City has suggested demonstrations of support at both consuls of Frnace and Germany this week as a million demonstrators prepare to express the global mandate against this war at the assembly building of the U.N.
Yeah MO'B. We should wait for the revolution and that will stop the war. In the meantime the rest of the world will try and avert human deaths.
"In the meantime the rest of the world will try and avert human deaths."
Gee! How will you this? A pact with the Devil? Find the fountain of Eternal Youth?
Perhaps you mean avert human deaths due to War in Iraq? Be clear!
In any case M o'B is correct, the sanctions would remain & so would the ongoing US & Brit bombing. Thousands of Iraqis would continue to die every month!
Graham, the so called U.N. is a tool of the imperialist powers. It is used only when it is in their interests to do so. During the East Timor genocide, the U.N. resolutions re Indonesian aggression were simply ignored. Not exactly surprising given the fact that the backers of the Surharto invasion were the very same powers who have “neglected” to enforce U.N. resolutions on Palestine but who are extremely concerned about resolutions on Iraq. Why do you think that is? The differences between U.S. imperialism and it’s junior partners are simply tactical, they all support the continuation of sanctions which have cost enough lives already, they are all just concerned about getting their share of the natural resource of Iraq. I am staggered that the Green Party would even consider supporting such a “proposal”. Well, I am almost staggered, but then I think of Joscha Fischer of Belgrade fame.
today the students of two universities held occupational exercisesin teh run up to the global day of anti War action Feb 15.
These action were held at Barcelona and NYC.
IN both students discussed the issues ouched upon above and also were invited to address the need for more inforamtion on the Western Alliance´s relationship to all states in the Iraqi region.
Turkey, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Kuwait.
This war was never going to be about just Saddam.

The UN is the best we have.
We shall miss it if it goes.
shall we not? Where as I presume we may soldier on without NATO.
Dave D is totally out of touch with Irish people, neutrality touches a chord with most Irish people. That is why FF and FG have not been able get rid of it up to now. Most Irish people are are neither anti war or pro war, but they are pro neutrality. So stop taking the line from London and give up your aul sins (trotskism)
