Army in Shannon - one rule for the middle classes, another for the working classes

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday February 04, 2003 19:36author by John Costigan

The working class get away with murder

So the Army are to defend the planes in Shannon.
Last year the Gardai battered a group of middle class protesters on the streets of Dublin. Now the Army may do the same thing to another middle class group in Shannon.

But if you're a working class scumbag and practice the following:
- Drug dealing
- Joyriding
- Demanding protection money
- Stealing/Mugging
- Violent assault

you can expect to get away with it. That's why the people in Limerick [and the rest of the country] do what they do - because they know the Gardai are afraid of them and at most they'll get a light jail sentence.

The vast majority of violent crime in this country is committed by those from the "socially disadvantaged areas". That will not change. Time to start the heavy jail sentences and stop treating those victims of crime with disdain

I know some of the protesters at the Shannon Peace Camp, and most of them are from 'working class' areas.

pig? troll? complete and utter moron?

How about trying to make this a world where there are no such distinctions?
How about addressing the real problem....(hint: not the working class)

While some of these army recruits are fairly dim and are trained to mindlessly follow orders, but some of them are not and are opposed to their officers plans to participate in military adventures abroad. Dont be too suprised if they refuse to follow orders and shoot down protesters. Russian soldiers refused to fire on their own peoplewhen ordered in the past. Every effort should be made to speak or communicate with the soldiers and getthem to see that wearenot the enemy.
