The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Mandela speaks out against War/Bush/Blair

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday February 03, 2003 17:41author by depp Report this post to the editors

Mandela called Mr Bush "a president who can't think properly and wants to plunge the world into holocaust".

Mandela speaks out;
"If you look at those matters, you will come to the conclusion that the attitude of the United States of America is a threat to world peace
It is clearly a decision that is motivated by George W Bush's desire to please the arms and oil industries in the United States of America."

He also said UK Prime Minister Tony Blair was in fact the "US foreign minister".

"Why does the United States behave so arrogantly?" Mr Mandela asked.
"Their friend Israel has got weapons of mass destruction but because it's their ally they won't ask the United Nations to get rid of them.
"They just want the oil," Mr Mandela went on. "We must expose this as much as possible."

Mandela called Mr Bush "a president who can't think properly and wants to plunge the world into holocaust".
He said war "would be devastating not just to Iraq but also to the whole of the Middle East and to other countries of the world".
-----------------

SO much support for peace, but so little chance of peace.
SO many of Bush cronies are involved in the arms industry, as well as oil.
US spends as much as the next 20 countries worldwide, on defence! there's no point spending it if you're not going to use it.
War to arms industry is like Christmas to a toy shop.
War will not stop with Iraq. Non-stop war = bigger and bigger defence budgets = bigger profits for the boys.
It's a simple ploy. All you need is the power. The system is in place, just give the orders. The system is working a treat. The challenge to change it is the most important challenge facing anyone interested in humanity. It would be a long term project. Many would be needed, to devote some of their time and energy on a regular basis to UNITING TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM. Everyone could continue their work on their own particular party/group/interest/action etc.

All Bush wants now is to be re-elected. It's the only thing he cares about.

I have never seen anybody with a more stupid looking head than Bush pretending to be grief-stricken at the deaths of seven astronauts.

Agree with posting, but just one thing I would like to nit pick
in the last line about Bush re-election. Bush of course stole the
election as very clearly documented by Greg Palast and others
(see http://www.gregpalast.com )

And as for the 2004 election, -that will be a facade even more so than
ever before. With electronic voting now becoming widespread in the
US (and Ireland), it would be worth reading the article at:

http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0131-01.htm
titled: If You Want To Win An Election, Just Control The Voting Machines

A quick summary of the article is that Nebraska Republican Chuck Hage
who won two senate elections, failed to disclose that Hagel was the
head of, and continues to own part interest in, the company that owns
the company that installed, programmed, and largely ran the voting machines
that were used by most of the citizens of Nebraska.

And our government thinks electronic voting is safe!

I would also be extremely wary of electronic voting.

People who don't mind slaughtering innocents, (Bush/Blair, and our own war supporters Ahern/Cowan/Harney/O' Dea etc.) obviously wouldn't bat an eyelid at stealing elections.

When electronic voting is brought in then we the people should surely be asked to vote on far more issues, surely the administrative burden in consulting the people would be lessened greatly - how about they give us a taste of democracy?

as a citizen of the European Union in the constitutiency of my birth by postal electronic or other means upon presenting my Irish passport at any designated dilpomatic mission of the Repbulic of Ireland. If I am afforded that right in keeping with my wider European rights I shall rescind any voting rights I hold as a resident of any other EU state. Thus I will only vote in Irish elections. I will offer no guarantee that I shall not try and "spoil" my electronic vote.
A succesful entry has been negotiated in to my email account.
i´m a clever elf.
