British TV Comedy Has Lost its Class Sat Nov 22, 2025 17:00 | Finlay McLaren
The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

Is the era of cheap internet surveys over? A new paper demonstrates that AIs can now be "trivially programmed" to answer online surveys in ways that are essentially indistinguishable from humans.

Thank Lockdowns for the Worst Budget in History Sat Nov 22, 2025 13:00 | Will Jones
We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

Taxpayers Are Charged for the BBC Whether They Like it or Not Sat Nov 22, 2025 11:00 | Charlotte Gill
It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

But what I'd like to say is thankyou yet again Mr.BOC for yet another plug for Indymedia, good work!
BOC obviously is reading this site with a fine toothcomb cos I can't find the comment about the honking horns he so willingly divulged, ah well maybe it was just a BOC brain invention!!
Everything BOC says about Indymedia is correct. And the above comments simply prove it.
I particulary like: "The moral high ground is crumbling and the veneer of youthful idealism and sloganeering is being stripped away to reveal a petulant, immature, manipulative core that is cavalier with the truth and incensed when challenged. "
A perfect description of Indymedia.ie.
------------------
"Indymedia is an interesting example of how activists work. While it claims to be an independent voice of truth, it is in fact a free-for-all where any nutter can pass off anything he or she wants as fact. Anything you publish goes straight on to the site, with the onus being on the contributor to ensure the facts are correct. Items may be removed afterwards if they are found to be inaccurate, libelous or otherwise illegal.
None of the standard controls that apply to the mainstream press Indymedia vilifies so much applies to Indymedia. There are no standards of proof, no lawyers, indeed no controls at all on what appears, apart from the threat of removal later on. Yet these hysterical propagandists have managed, on occasion, to palm themselves off as journalists. The video footage of the May Day riots was taken by Indymedia. Yet it was carried on RTE as news footage.
For the record, some of the Indymedia crowd on the discussion board were gracious enough to admit that their woman wasn't terribly convincing on Marian Finucane and that the rest of us made a few reasonable points. Most of them, however, resorted to ranting and raging and personal insults and saying things like, "It's a pity he wasn't standing in front of the nose of that plane as the hatchet struck."
WHILE I'm sure there are many fine principled people in the peace movement, I must say that, in general, I have never come across a more narrow-minded, self-righteous bunch in my life.
And as they get the publicity they crave they are showing this to a wider audience. The peace movement is now imploding their icon is in prison with little public support apart strangely from that of Trevor Sargent and extreme republicans in the US.
The moral high ground is crumbling and the veneer of youthful idealism and sloganeering is being stripped away to reveal a petulant, immature, manipulative core that is cavalier with the truth and incensed when challenged.
And, by the way, you guys, it might interest you to know that none of the rest of us want a war either."
Brendan O'Connor is a Fianna Fáil member, what would you expect?
To say that planes carrying troops to the impending massacre in Iraq are not part of the U.S. war machine is willful ignorance coming from a so-called journalist. He clearly cannot recognize facts. Check out irishfreedom.net for more on axtivist Mary Kelly.
i write petulant little ogra everytime i refer to young FG.
Deconsturctional analysis of the texts
I have used petulant less than 12 times.
How many times has Brendan used it?
How does he say it?
does he stretch out the "u" or is it more ...emphasis on the "nt"?
"I must say that, in general, I have never come across a more narrow-minded, self-righteous bunch in my life."
try looking in the mirror brendan. besides, according to youself, you only met three of the peace-campers. did you meet every one of the 3000 people that went to the demo on the 18th? or the one before that in dublin? or the one before that? and will you personally meet and greet every one of us on the 15th? i look forward to meeting you.
as for mary kelly being our 'heronie' or whatever you caled her? this is an anti-war movement, its not about 'heroes' its about opposing war. everyone has their role to play.
In a debate over taxpayers paying for stuff,
BOC was presented with the fact that the Govt. already uses over E1,000,000 per annum to subsidise military flights.
he said there was no such thing.
He was then told to check it out with Michael O Farrell in the Examiner (although it was probably Carl O'Brien in the Examiner who did that story)
Is BOC just pretending to be ignorant of the Examiner? Or is his research just very poor?
Or does he not read the Examiner because Sean Moncrieff writes for them, and BOc hates to be reminded that on "Don't Feed The Gondola's"
BOC was the unfunny obnoxious one... whereas Moncrieff has a bit of wit and charm. (especially compared to BOC)
By the way, you should read Moncrieff's article
"take the money from Soldier Yanks"
It's an excellent satire and it really adresses the issues (unlike the FF code of BOC)
"Yet these hysterical propagandists have managed, on occasion, to palm themselves off as journalists. The video footage of the May Day riots was taken by Indymedia. Yet it was carried on RTE as news footage."
Well, there's no fear of Brendan ever passing himself off as a journalist! Exactly what distinction is he trying to make between Indymedia's "video footage" and "news footage"? Would the footage of Gardai applying batons to the heads of protestors be seen in a different light if viewers were aware that it had been captured by "hysterical propagandists" rather than by responsible journalists?
The muppet goes on national radio and complains that the peaceniks are getting more coverage than they deserve and lo and behold devotes a full column to them and those like them.
Funniest thing he's done in years. Keep up the good work and sure if doesn't work out for you, you can always fall back on the ol' taxi work. You look like a natural.
As for the quote about standing in front of the nose I was just trying out your style of humour. Oops you didn't find it funny either. I won't try copy you again.
