The BBC's Director of Comedy wants to "save the sitcom". But the sitcom is only endangered because most of them stopped being funny. As To the Manor Born reminds us, British comedy has lost its class, says Finlay McLaren.

We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

It's bad enough that all UK TV users are forced to fund the BBC via a TV licence. But it's worse than that, says Charlotte Gill: millions of pounds of taxpayers' money are handed to the corporation via backdoor channels.

Labour give Tallaght anti-war meeting the cold shoulder

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday January 31, 2003 14:41author by Maubere Report this post to the editors

A former Labour councellor from Tallaght left an anti-war meeting last night just before it was about to start

I was at an anti-war meeting in Tallaght last night, it was fairly small but it was good to meet some anti-war people in the area. Sean Crowe (Sinn Féin TD), Mick Murphy (SP) and Donal McCarry (SWP) spoke at the meeting. Don Tipping from the Labour party was meant to be the first speaker, he was seen standing outside the room at about 7.50 (meeting started at 8.00) but then amazingly he left before the meeting got going and didn't even say a word to anyone! I presume he say the small size of the crowd and decided that this particular band-wagon wasn't big enough for him to pretend that he and the Labour party (excluding Micheal D?)is against the war and not just looking for votes.

Feel free to throw accusations of political point scoring at me but Labour doesn't seem to have sent a lot of people to these local meetings against the war in Iraq. The SP and SWP have all mobilised for it and Finian McGrath is speaking at one up in Dublin North East but Labour don't even seemt o be going through the motions with the possible exception of De Rossa speaking at the meeting in Ballymun.

Dundrum had their meeting last Monday, Labours turn-out out of a crowd of 30 (35 including the speakers) was 6-7 members locally, including one of the local councillors. Maybe it is an uneven thing on their part at this stage. Will see their approach if the UN actually gives its "offical" backing to the attack on Iraq etc.

More positively, last nights meeting launched a united front Anti War Campaign in Tallaght.

It was decided to hold a petition at the Square (Entrance near McDonalds)between 1-3 P.M. on Saturday.

Also, a campaign meeting will be held in Molloys pub on Thurs Feb 6th at 8 p.m.

My friend we know labour's attitude if ".... the UN actually gives its "offical" backing to the attack on Iraq etc" They will sell out once again just like they did during the Nice referendum and all the times that they were in government when thew only gave pittances to the poor.
