We're a week away from the most painful Budget in history thanks largely to the eye-watering cost of lockdown. Yet Baroness Hallett says next time the Government must be ready to go harder and faster. This is insanity.

This time on newstalk106fm

Damien Kibird had some right wing piece of shit from the Sunday Times on his afternoon news show a few minutes who was saying and I quote him "Over 80% of Venezuelans oppose Hugo Chavez and that the US supported 'general strike' had mass popular support."

No surprise there as he named Felix Dzerzinsky
(spelling) as the first head of the KGB.
Felix was head of the cheka as we know.
Just wondering was kiberd in the WP in the 80's?

it seems silly to remind everyone that most Venezeulans aren´t even counted.
so it might be more accurate to say that 80% of a very privelaged minority in one of the poorest countries of South America when polled about the strike agenda some weeks ago thought Chavez would better be replaced.
They did not say
"we support constitutional rebellion"
"we support the overthrow of a democratically elected government".
so it´s more disinformation.
I´m beginning to feel less depressed about the whole Venezuealan thing. I wrote "comment" http://ireland.indymedia.org/cgi-bin/newswire.cgi?id=22877 the morning of the demonstrations that ended in two deaths, and then wrote "questions for readers"afterwards in which I told readers that the rightwing were associating Chavez with AlQaeda http://ireland.indymedia.org/cgi-bin/newswire.cgi?id=22957, I have been very impressed by the response across individuals political parties and well the whole crew, coz there is nothing we can do.
well there is.
we are seeing yet again how they work.
those who overthrow democratically elected governments they don´t like.
And we are seeing that the old formula really hasn´t changed that much.
I recall last year, when I wrote in my well known slightly drugged / drunk / trippy less than totally serious tongue in cheek poetic style that we had "two million undeclared on the streets in Venezuela".

I thought long about that.
I discussed it with south american activists from syndicalist backgrounds (full spectrum).

I realised that as long as that many people are on the streets every day through the summer in carnival atmosphere then there is deadlock.

Local grassroots groups learnt from Argentina.
They do what they can to ensure supply of food etc.,

And the masses on the street though they be ascribed or claimed by the "political leaders" as everytime, in fact are saving their "state" from civil war.
as long as they are not shot.
at least that was the plan.

it was felt that no military officer would order his troops to fire upon people who have being having a politicised "fiesta" on the streets for over a month.

It was estimated that two months of general strike is the truly crucial stage.

We have only seen a month.

And now we have seen a most riduculous card played.
Al Qaeda.
So we must think why this card has been played.
whether or not it is on google the article was carried by an assortment of right wing newspapers in Ven. on Sunday last.

The Al Qaeda card has been played globally.
by muslims and those who seem to think our best future may be secured by going to slow war of attrition against muslim countries and most particularly Oil states.

But when this card is played in South America, it begins to seem unreal ¿no?
now we may begin to remember that this card too has been played in Ireland, the Gardaí were reported to being bolstered in their surveillence role by those who seek out Al Qaeda.
The Gardaí were reported to being allocated significant funding and extra powers perhaps in breach of our civil rights to fight the AlQ card.

Am i a silly billy to wonder is the AlQ card real anymore?
and Guinness proved that 99% of time was spent waiting on a pint to settle.

Most Venezuealans probably don´t give a shit about Chavez or not, but they were invited to take part in a state wide poll called elections, and they chose to elect through that mechanism a government that has certain ideas popular throughout that state on Oil, its ownership and profitability.
Oil is very profitable.
lots of profit.
perhaps enough profit for the basic things in life.
I suspect that the basic things in life are the most important for those two million people who continue to protest.

I´ve left a link to an old venezuealan article written by someone else that i liked last year.
