The problem, however, was not his shoddy track record of human rights violations, abuse of power, or clandestine warfare. He resigned because of his consulting firm. . Kissinger had been under pressure from families of 9/11 victims to reveal his client list to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. In his letter to Bush, he said, "It is clear that, although specific potential conflicts can be resolved in this manner, the controversy would quickly move to the consulting firm I have built and own.
