Young Drivers call for price control on Motor insurance following

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Thursday April 18, 2002 12:04author by Finghin - Motor Insurance Justice Action Group

Young Drivers call for price control on Motor insurance following publication of MIAB Report. The report shows that insurance companies are making 10 time the profits of their UK counterparts.

"It is difficult to have any great confidence that the high cost of
insurance will alter radically in the near future as the current situation
suits to many interests" is a quote from the executive summary of the long
awaited MIAB report.

"MIJAG welcomes the publication of the report and congratulates the MIAB
Committee for its good work. It is official now that Ireland has a very
expensive, in-efficient and profitable motor Insurance Industry that is in
need of radical surgery. Un-fortunately if every one of the 67
recommendations in the report were implemented there is no guarantee that
Young Drivers paying ?3,000, ?4,000 and ?5,000 for Insurance would pay less.
In that sense the report does not go nearly far enough" said Mr Murphy.

"This Government and the one before it wrote reports on this issue but are
un-willing to tackle the huge and well organised vested interests involved.
The Young Drivers will continue to mount huge Political Pressure including
backing Candidates such as David Green in order to force the Government to
take action that will affect the cost of Insurance" Mr Murphy said. "MIJAG
believes that no driver with a clean driving record including beginners
should have to pay more than ?1,000 for Insurance. That demand will only be
won when Young Voters who are being ripped off force the Government to act.
The MIAB could have recommended price control as a way of bringing about a
quick change in the situation but ruled it out. If the Government are
serious about tackling this and now they have no excuses, they should do
something dramatic like introducing price controls before the Election is
called" Mr Murphy added.

Cars have their uses alright but environmentally they are locusts devouring not just money but resources, metal and space for ever expanding roads. They pollute the air and contribute massively to global warming. But everyone knows this already.

Like smokers, there's a collective denial of these facts in favour of continuing to use cars with no regard for them as causes and effects of environmental malaise.

At best, they're a necessary evil - which is why I can't understand the existance of an organisation like MIJAG. Why get all fired up an politicised about the "right" to get ripped off and to pollute the land? Why run a candidate for election on this issue when its as obvious as the nose you your face that there are so very many other things more important than this?

Selfish yuppie tossers.

I'm sick of these silly uninformed comments about MIJAG. The fact is that the MIJAG campaign is not a yuppie campaign, yuppies can afford car insurance. It is a genuine campaign comprising mainly of young workers that are forced to use cars and are forced to pay massivly inflated premiums as the MIAB report has shown. Car use is a neccesary evil for many, it is a symptom of the total anarchy housing market, which has caused thousends of young people forced to buy housing miles away and commute to Dublin using cars.

This is blatent discrimination on behalf of the insurance companies, that is why it is being opposed. The MIJAG campaign calls for a fully adequate public transport system, please got the the site and read more about the other demands of the campaign.

David Green is standing in Dublin Mid West to make this an issue in the election, many other prominant MIJAG campaigners will be standing also. David will do very well, alot better than most independents and small parties I suspect, keep an eye out for his result on 18 May I think many will be surprised. This will be an issue in the election he will take votes from the establishment capitalist parties and I encourage young people to vote for David Green in the election and oppose discrimination of young people
