SF challenge to Unionists on united Ireland referendum

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Friday December 06, 2002 00:29author by SF questioner

Mitchell McLoughlin challenged Unionists to say if they would respect the result of a referendum if NI vote for a united Ireland.

SF put down a challenge to Unionists asking if they would respect a result on a United Ireland referendum.

SF obviously are considering the possiblity of 1 million protestants being coerced into a united Ireland. They must see this as a problem. The fact is that the protestants will not accept a united Ireland on the basis of rule by the likes of FF-SF-FG-PD.

Do Sinn Fein not see their complete lack of appeal to protestants as a problem? is excluding a protestants not ultimatly a barrier to a united Ireland that they desire so much. Will someone in SF please tell me why they want a united Ireland that will be run by FF-FG etc. What's the point of a united Ireland if it means the re-partition and civil war? What is the point in a united Ireland that will not have a proper health care system, education etc.

In a couple of poorly written sentences referring to some theoretical idea about Sinn Féin and our policies which bears no relation to reality but are instead a below average attempt to get a row ging for no good reason you have convinced me that I should leave Sinn Féin.

You're absolutely right, a united Ireland with crap services run by FF/FG/Labour/PD is largely pointless. Maybe we should turn SF into a party that wants a United Ireland with crap services run by Bertie Ahern just so that you can post something to Indymedia that has a shred of truth or credible political analysis in it. Alternatively you could educate yourself but it's so much easier to make stuff up.

Justin says "Maybe we should turn SF into a party that wants a United Ireland with crap services run by Bertie Ahern..."

I would have thought that's exactly what Gerry and Co. are actively trying to do, especially since you've abandoned the idea of a just struggle against the invader who has held our land in thrall for 800 years.

Stormont Never! - now you've your MLAs and your (temporarily suspended) Ministers.

Salaries from the Queen! - Never - well only a few dozen.

Offices in Westminster - Never! (well just for Gerry, Martin, Michelle and Pat)

Policing Committees - Never! (well maybe sometime soon)

Support FF in government - Never! (well only when Bertie gives us the call).

Vote for Bin Charges in Dublin - Oh no we didn't, we just missed the vote, and that was nearly two years ago anyway!

YE'VE SOLD OUT THE REPUBLIC...

It's somewhat difficult to take seriously some-one who uses the phrase 'invader who has held our land in thrall for 800 years' without a shred of irony.

Considering that Sinn Feinn ignored the majority of people in the six counties who voted democratically to remain within the UK why should the unionists concede to "their" majority?
Does Dublin really want to pick up the bill for policing and security forces in the north?
