Michael McDowell has just introduced a new Justice Bill which could pose a serious threat to privacy. This bill demands that data relating to the personal details of citizens (mobile phone calls, internet usage etc.) be retained for up to four years as opposed to a shorter period for billing purposes (c. 6 months) as was previously the case. This bill contravenes European directives on privacy and is one we should keep a close eye on, because it certainly seems the Government intends to keep a close eye on us!
