Liberal press asleep ( on Coup to Oust Chavez )

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Sunday April 14, 2002 14:36author by concerned reader Report this post to the editors

(Chavez) Bad show from the liberal press. Anybody could tell the whole thing was well dodgy.

Bad show from the liberal press. Anybody could tell the whole thing was well dodgy. Oil/military/US/management strikes (what the hell is a management strike?)

The press followed the US led line in that this was some form of popular rising, this is to be expected of our press and tv. in Ireland. But what's the deal with papers like the Guardian and Observer. On some pages this week they carry reports about the Oxfam report of free trade, the state of the haitian economy and reviews of anti/ reform globalistion books by George Soros and Greg Palast.

On other pages they run no brainer articles uncritacally reporting the coup and repeating dodgy neo-liberal information about how and why it happened - this kind of crap;

"US officials said Chávez was to blame for the crisis, which had been provoked by 'undemocratic actions committed or encouraged' by the Chávez administration. They said he had gagged the media and banned demonstrations while allowing his supporters to kill or injure more than 200 protesters." - the Observer

and this is what most press basically repeated.

Whats the point of having liberal press if they won't bother their arses to report a story properly when it counts ie. while it is happening.
indymedia while a bit quiet on most sites at least carried disent on some of the south american sites see 12 am report on this newswire.
