Funeral for 'neutrality' held in Cork

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Saturday November 16, 2002 23:45author by Fintan Lane - Cork Peace Alliance

A few hundred people participated in a Cork Peace Alliance anti-war demonstration through the streets of Cork today (16 November). The protest, in the form of a mass funeral, was led by a coffin marked 'Irish neutrality', which in turn was followed by mourners bearing wreaths. Hundreds of leaflets, highlighting the use of Shannon airport by US forces, were distributed and there was a very favourable response from onlookers. One particularly striking feature of the protest was the presence of large numbers of teenagers.

Great Idea, would a weekly/monthly wake be feasible? Lets not forget the sneaky killers who caused the funeral in the first place, the paid poodles Mr Ahern And Mr Cowan.

know that Finland is protesting against NATO (british led) exercises in its waters, and increased spending on military toys meeting NATO guidelines.
know that Sweden is too.
know that Austria is protesting daily infrigements of airspace and exercises on its borders.

At the danger of sounding like a spart, Ireland was never really a neutral country. It gave lipservice to being neutral and non aligned during the cold war but in reality were pro US and pro capitalist.

The thing is I do not want Ireladn to be a neutral country. I would like to see Ireland play a full role in world relations but on the side of the oppressed and the downtrodden. I am not a pacifist so if that means military interventions to against a US backed coup for example I would have no problem what so ever with it.

I am just posting some photos of Saturday's Cork 'funeral for Irish neutrality' as a separate message on the newswire.
