Members of Libertarians Against Nice picketed the Irish Business and Employers Confederation (IBEC) pro-Nice conference 'Our Future in Europe - Nice and Beyond' conference at the Burlington Hotel at lunchtime today. As we arrived Pat Cox's Nice campaign bus fled the scene.
At the picket LAN spokesperson Andrew Flood said
"Inside they are now sitting down to lunch while we stand outside at the gate. This is symbolic of the sort of Europe the Nice treaty is about - one where the European bosses get the feast and European workers get the scraps from the table.
"All the recent European summits have seen massive demonstrations in opposition to a bosses Europe. At the Seville summit members of LAN marched alongside Spanish trade unions members, French anti-racists and Swedish feminists. At the Nice summit itself there were demonstrations of over 100,000 and tear gas firing riot police kept protesters back from the summit venue.. There are two visions of Europe on offer, the pro-business Nice treaty favoured by IBEC or the Europe from Below promoted by those taking part in the EU summit protests.
"A No vote to Nice will be a blow to those like IBEC who favour a bosses Europe. But it is also a step forwards for those who want to build a Europe from Below.
