Judge Seamus Hughes had a total of six penalty points wiped from his driver’s licence on three separate occasions between 2011 and 2012, Phoenix Magazine claims.
The Wesport native, who is also a former Fianna Fail TD, clocked up the first offence on March 28 2011, shortly after taking over from retired judge, John Neilan in District Number Nine.
On that occasion, he was recorded in his Audi doing 74km/h in a 50km/h zone at Knocknaphunta, Castlebar, Co Mayo.
Two penalty points were later quashed from his record on the grounds that the incident was an “emergency.”
Later that same year, Judge Hughes was again stopped, this time at Tulsk, Co Roscommon, travelling at 72km/h in a 50km/h zone on November 7.
It is believed those two points were erased by gardaí on “humanitarian grounds.”
The third and final incident was recorded last September when he was observed doing 69km/h along a stretch of road with 50km/h speed limit attached.
“Humanitarian grounds” were likewise cited by gardai for the removal of two penalty points stemming from the aformentioned incident at Bellanagare, Co Roscommon.
