Chantal Akerman was one of the most radical experimental directors working in the radical experimental Seventies. We associate avant garde filmmaking with a big stylistic fuss: weird choppy editing, messy narrative structure, a twirling camera… Not with Akerman! The weirdness is inside her characters.

Less is more here, and for the first part of the film (structured in three parts like classic drama) we just watch a young woman stuck in a world of her own who cant do much and cant say much… Eventually, she snaps out of it and takes off to find her only anchor to life, the woman she loves.

Her journey features some casual sex with a guy – a remarkable scene, but it will not prepare you for what lies ahead. The film ends with a jaw-dropping 10-minute-long lesbian sex scene which is not about sex at all. We can promise this: you have never seen anything like it.
