3,000 anarchists in Greece march in solidarity to Athens Indymedia & 98 FM

Taking the fight from the internet to the streets. On April 25th, 2013 approximately 3.000 anarchists marched in solidarity to Athens Indymedia and 98 FM that have been censored by the greek State since April 11th, amongst dozens of solidarity actions all over Greece and some parts of Europe.

On April 24th, 2013, a massive solidarity banner was hanged at the main univeristy building in one of the busiest streets in the center of Athens. 72 anarchists were detained for almost 12 hours by the police and 6 were charged with offending the greek national flag by replacing it with the red black of anarchism!

One of the first street protests on a large scale globally against internet censorship.

We will not be silenced. The fight continues.

You have to admire the greeks

If Irish indymedia closed down tomorrow, hardly anyone in Ireland would give a shit.

They seem to be completely happy swallowing everything state media tells them.

it's all corporate facebook, RTE, P.ie, Irish times.

The whole idea of an independent media seems lost on them as they sleepwalk through an orchestrated neo liberal attack on their society.

Greek language articles should now be encouraged here.

I hope the greeks make full use of this site since they no longer have one of their own, and the Irish don't appreciate the resource.

To indyfan,

I agree, we don't utilise it. I'm an anarchist myself, and I'm excluded from so much (passing) information because everyone assumes everyone else uses facebook. So most of my anarchist friends/comrades are also on facebook. As far as I'm concerned, any serious revolutionary will not use it. We're nearly at the point where using it could be considered police cooperation, or worse yet, police collaboration.

Just a decade ago, the police in the US used to spend hundreds of man-hours hunting, and sending thousands of subpoenas to force information from individuals/activists/revolutionaries, now these people hand over all their connections; links, friends, family, and expose their location and continually update their political activism, completely publicly, why?

Go on the Greeks.. go on the Greek anarchists!

Indymedia’s model of a collectively organized, anti-capitalist , global, grass roots news site was first advanced in 1999 by anti- globalization protesters during the Seattle mass anti-WTO protests that year . Its rapid growth could only have been seen as a real threat to corporate control of the media – particularly after the role indymedia played in organizing the 2003 mass anti-war demonstrations . Facebook is the individualistic capitalist alternative to a collectively organized media .Who needs an old-fashioned 1999 collective model when Facebook allows everybody to be his/her own editor, economics pundit ,recipe writer, censor- in-chief, industrial correspondent, canine horoscopist etc. ?
As I understand it , there are plans to hold a seminar session dedicated to the need for a revival of Indymedia at the Dublin Alternative G8 being held in June.
