Ireland is one of the last bastions of hare coursing...an "honour it shares with Pakistan.
Coursing fans posting on the "Greyhound Nuts" forum, which caters for the greyhound industry in Ireland, have recently been claiming "links" between organisers of the bloodsport here in Ireland and their counterparts in Pakistan. Given the horrors of the Pakistani version of their "sport", this is surprising. Or maybe then again it shouldn't be. With or without muzzles, coursing is immensely cruel to the hares...

I was talking to an English man at the greyhound derby final who told me a very interesting story . He works for a big land owner who farms over 2000 acres and since the hare coursing ban has shot over 400 hares as they cause a lot of damage to crops and young trees. Two years ago on an organised shoot he invited a few business associates one of who originates from Pakistan. The Pakistani gentleman would use his private jet to transport unwanted hares to Pakistan where they would be released into the wild and this would be beneficial to all concerned including the hares. So last Autumn instead of shooting hares they netted 20 bucks and 120 females and flew them out. I don't know if this was legal or not. He said they will be doing the same again in a months time and that the hares released in Pakistan have multiplied since their arrival. This imo is a great idea. It strengthens coursing in Pakistan.

You have to hand it to the Pakistani's for ingenuity. However Kieran I don't think that the antis would see this as saving hares. They would rather have thousands of hares killed annually from shooting in GB than just a handful from coursing. Have you heard them complaining of shooting hares in GB since coursing was banned? If only we could arrange to transport the antis to Pakistan with the next batch of hares all our troubles would be over as I don't think their animal rights nonsense would be tolerated too easily over there.
