What is LETS
A Local Exchange Trading Scheme (LETS) is a community-based system where goods and services are exchanged, not as one-to-one barter, but using a pooled system of credits and debits.
To support this local currency is used which can only be spent within the group. A record of the transactions is kept by the group and the balances are published to members together with a listing of what is offered and what is wanted by the members.
There are now several LETS schemes in Ireland, over 400 in the UK and thousands worldwide. A Timebank is a somewhat similar arrangement except that a Timebank is restricted to services.
