Historic handshake or surrendering of history?

category national | rights and freedoms | other press author Wednesday June 27, 2012 14:11author by Indyjourno Report this post to the editors

Earlier today former Provisional IRA commander and current Deputy First Minister of the Stormont Assembly, Martin McGuiness, shook hands with the UK Queen.

Sinn Féin portrayed this as a “powerful signal that peace-building requires leadership”. While others proposed that it was the final capitulation of the Provisional to the establishment.

Republican Sinn Féin's view:
"Provisionals are part and parcel of British administration in Ireland‏
In a statement on June 22 the President of Republican Sinn Féin, Des Dalton, said:
“The upcoming meeting of British Crown Minister Martin McGuinness with the Queen of England is merely a symbolic confirmation of the fact that the Provisionals are part and parcel of the British administration in Ireland. The reality of British Rule on the ground for nationalists has not changed with arbitrary arrest and internment without trial still used to secure British occupation."

......and his 24th June 'No Welcome for British Queen' statement :

".... (Provisional) Sinn Féin opposes the proposed state visit of the Queen of England, Commander-in-Chief of the British armed forces until there is complete withdrawal of the British military and the British administration from Ireland . And until there is justice and truth for victims of collusion, no official welcome should be accorded to any officer of the British armed forces of any rank....."

Unless I'm reading it wrong (!) , it seems that Mr Doherty , for one , is not at all 'on script' with other members of the leadership of his party ?

Thanks,
Sharon.

The British monarchy is still the same rotten institution of syrupy propaganda that masks the power of in-bred landed aristocrats, gluttonous arms dealers and corporate dictators. I'm a bit surprised at Sinn Fein being quite so openly hypocritical, but then again maybe not as the pursuit of a morsel of this power seems to be their only concern nowadays.

After making a record +£16 million profit from her unemployed subjects forced onto free labour workfare in the middle of a banker caused recession, the old battleaxe of the Saxe-Coburg Goethe dynasty is going into a Catholic church up north to 'heal wounds'. It'll be a good fit. One rotten, brain dead institution hanging on to some semblance of undead life by embracing another.

..for many years...if you must take the shilling...get as close to the schilling as you can.

Many a happy voyage throught the San Andreas Vaults, watching the golden sparkle of our oceanic sovereigns...anti-aircraft division, we had to watch for the Austrian cheese-pirates, the terror of the Alpine coast at the times....I still live with the horror of the collateral damage to the Lucerne cheese arsenal.

The handshake between the British Queen and Sinn Fein leader Martin McGuinness is something significant even though most people in the North of Ireland have shrugged their shoulders and have only at the last minute really taken it under their notice because of the hype from the media. Both the British State and Sinn Fein wanted it to happen for their own reasons and were more than happy that it got the media blitz that it did.

Every commentator aware of the history has remarked on the sea-change that has taken place at this diamond jubilee visit compared to that during the Queen’s silver jubilee in 1977. At that time republicans demonstrated and rioted against her visit while today the hand of friendship has been extended. However beneath this difference the purpose of the visit has been exactly the same on both occasions although much more successful on this one.
