When Dicey summarised the principle of parliamentary sovereignty he wrote: "Parliament can do everything but make a woman a man and a man a woman." Alas, thanks to the European Court of Human Rights, that's no longer true.

I prefer the Bolivarian methodology. I found the maoists imperious enough when I ran into them. Ejected for asking the wrong question, again. If you disagreed you were immediately classified as 'lumpen', or some other obscurantist heretic. I prefer open debate to ideological dogmatism. We get enough of that from the Right.

Maoists like the lumpenproletariat these days, at least some of them do. Had an online discussion about it. Theres a good (imho) article written by one Maoist criticising the lumpens. Must put it up here.

As for Bolivarians, Chavez seems to be coming along well. Got a shock the other day though. I misread a headline and thought Chavez was dead but it was only a reactionary ex president Carlos Andres Perez.

seems appropriate, doubt the comrades will object. If they do they haven't advanced since they threw me out(I was only visiting, before gay Mitchell attacks).

Interesting article. Deserves to be a story in its own right. Would you repost it in the Other Press section as such?

I'm afraid I'm a techno-dunce pat, but put it up yourself. By the time you explain how I'll be totally lost. Takes me all day to plug the machine in. I'm the chalk n slate generation. But I find it one of the more rational websites for facts, and balanced appraisal.

The so called "revolts" in North Africa were entirely CIA constructions. Anyone trying to take any solace from them is entirely self deluded. What Maoists need to be doing now is supporting the Libyan resistance to Nato oil piracy and genocide. The principal front against imperialism in now in Libya. The fence has been burned. Time for the European Left to wake up out of its dreams.

I agree with a lot of your posts but where is your evidence that the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt were CIA directed? In particular Egypt where the masses are continuing to attempt to overthrow the military junta which has replaced Mubarak?

From revolts in Arab countries to new democratic revolution moving towards socialism and communism

“The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.

Freeman and slave, patrician and plebeian, lord and serf, guild-master and journeyman, in a word, oppressor and oppressed, stood in constant opposition to one another, carried on an uninterrupted, now hidden, now open fight, a fight that each time ended, either in a revolutionary reconstitution of society at large, or in the common ruin of the contending classes. […]

The modern bourgeois society that has sprouted from the ruins of feudal society has not done away with class antagonisms. It has but established new classes, new conditions of oppression, new forms of struggle in place of the old ones. […]

Society as a whole is more and more splitting up into two great hostile camps, into two great classes directly facing each other — Bourgeoisie and Proletariat. […]

All the preceding classes that got the upper hand sought to fortify their already acquired status by subjecting society at large to their conditions of appropriation. […] Though not in substance, yet in form, the struggle of the proletariat with the bourgeoisie is at first a national struggle. The proletariat of each country must, of course, first of all settle matters with its own bourgeoisie.”

Marx and Engels, Communist Manifesto, 1848.

FROM COLONIZATION TO NEO-COLONIALISM

African countries were all colonies of the imperialist powers. After “subjecting the farmers to the domination of the city” the bourgeoisie made dependent “nations of peasants to nations of bourgeois”.

The settlements were looted, the peasants reduced to slavery or semi-slavery. The peoples have continued to revolt against the colonizers. After the Second World War, the imperialists have granted formal independence to these countries in front of their rebellions and wars for national liberation. In most cases, except in China and Vietnam, the liberation struggles were led by the national bourgeoisie who had consolidated “the already acquired status by subjecting society at large”. It has agreements of cooperation with the former colonial power, enslaving people for its own profit. And colonialism has been replaced by neo-colonialism, in other words, private hunting grounds of the imperialist ruling classes suppressing popular protests. The regimes supported by the imperialists have been and still are corrupted regimes who have granted them operating licenses for natural resources (mines, forests, farmland, etc.). They received a percentage that they turned to their benefit at the expense of the country. Corruption is widespread.

THE REVOLTS IN ARAB COUNTRIES AND AFRICA

With liquidation of the socialist system in the USSR and the former socialist countries and in China, and the transformation of communist parties in social-democrats parties, the working classes and the people were left without leadership. But “where there is oppression, there is resistance”. Struggles, strikes have grown despite the repression.

The cup was full. After the immolation of a young graduate in the south of Tunisia the revolt broke out and spread like wild fire all over Tunisia and Egypt. Ben Ali and Mubarak fled, chased by the revolt which spread to Bahrain (stopped by the military intervention of Saudi and UAE), in Yemen and Syria where it continues despite the fierce repression of the regime. In Libya, a civil war led to fall of Khadafy with the support the imperialist forces of NATO.

The ruling classes are not ready to give up their privileges voluntarily, nor the imperialist to give up plunder. They just need more democracy -that means bourgeois democracy- and keep unchanged the State apparatus without overthrowing the exploiting classes to continue the operation in other forms.

Ben Ali’s party (RCD) and Mubarak were dissolved; their most prominent leaders aside, those less prominent are ready to form new parties. The new parties, lay or religious, repressed during the dictatorship, are reborn. Free elections, a parliamentary regime, a reform of the Constitution are proposed.

In Arab countries and other oppressed countries, the working class and lower classes are crushed by three forces: the compradore and bureaucratic bourgeoisie forces, semi-feudal retrograde forces, supported by the imperialists.

THE REVOLT: A FIRST STEP TOWARDS REVOLUTION

The revolt in Arab countries is nevertheless a first step to revolution and part of the general struggle for the emancipation of mankind. It is a constituent part of proletarian revolution. But without a revolutionary theory, with no leadership, the people’s uprising cannot lead to complete real revolution. No party talks about the necessary reversal of the ruling pro-imperialist forces and classes in order to establish a real new democracy, the only way to use the resources of the country for the welfare of the people. The question of power, its class nature, i.e. the question of who holds the power is the central issue.

“In proportion as the exploitation of one individual by another will also be put an end to, the exploitation of one nation by another will also be put an end to.”

Marx and Engels
